A sample response follows A favorite passage of mine is the one in which Buddy and his friend flummox pecans for their fruitcakes. Its set in the kitchen on a November morning afterwards the characters have gathered the nuts in the woods. To me the mood is one of decision joy in the midst of a col d, lonely place. Other people dont seem to be around, but the kitchen is warmed by the fire and filled with the characters joy and friendship. Theres a short letter between light and dark in this paragraphthe wage increase moon and the fire on one hand, the growing darkness of the night on the otherthat seems to me to show the delicate balance between happiness and desolation in the characters. The image of the characters reflections in a dark mirror, mingling with the rising moon, sum that up for me. In that dark mirror theres a hint of another moodthe bittersweet mood of the gravid Buddy looking nostalgically back at his childhood and a few precious moments, fully aware that as the events of the story shed the rich emotional life that sustained him as a boy, so those same moments, the empty shells of his memories, now feed the transforming fire that makes him a writer.
